when you dont listen...
you get punched...you cats will love this story. it's a story of one of our new drivers. not bikers. don't get me wrong...we have some special bikers but, as i've stated before, none come close to how special our drivers are...ha? anyway...lets get on to the story.
the days has been long and boring. not much going on these days. we hope it'll pick up soon but, for now, messengers are forced to take whatever they can. anywhoo...the driver is at his last drop in a suburb of chicago. he arrives but there's something wrong...
6806...say man...i can't deliver these packages. there's like four people outside of this bar and i think they're all cracked out. they're definitely drunk. they're yelling and kicking my car...i don't need this.
...i did my best to calm him down. i made phone calls but got no answer from the the sender or the delivery recipient. i notified the driver to just hold the packages and get out of there...
j.dot...say, i don't know whats going on but you should just get out of there. you're right...you don't need that. it's not worth you getting in trouble for some delivery. just hold the packages and dispatch will call you later as to what to do with the packages. we made phone calls and now we're just waiting to hear back.
6806...these people are crazy. i don't know what their problem is. they're all cracked out.
j.dot...like i said, get out of there. go home and relax. dispatch will call you later if we hear from them.
6806...you know what. let me check with the liquor store thats attached to the bar. maybe he knows whats going on.
j.dot...wait, what? listen...i've already told you to get out of there. it's not worth the delivery to get hurt. GO HOME!
6806...naw man, im not afraid of these crackheads!
...i stopped talking to him. there was no changing the drivers mind. he was on his own. some time goes by and i receive another call. turns out he somehow made it into the bar and apparently one of the ladies who was cracked out closed the door behind him. she then rocked him on the side of his head...wtf?! with what? i don't know...maybe it was just a straight up punch? all i know is the cops were called and charges are being pressed. i think the driver is still in the hospital...something about his equilibrium being off?
the story gets better...apparently the lady who rocked him might have been the owner of the bar and who the packages were for...haha! she opens the bar randomly for friends. doesn't really have a set schedule or anything...just opens up when they feel like partying. God i love this story. sometimes this job brings me so much entertainment. Lord knows we could use it in these slow times.
moral of the story...listen to your dispatcher. when you don't listen, you might get smacked...peace.

haiti...
i got my check from work yesterday and attached to it was a piece of paper. it's not that it hasn't happened before...you know, the whole paper attached to the check. it's usually to tell us things about the company, insurance, and whatnot. this time...it was something i truly did not expect.
the company was asking it's employees to donate to haiti...any little bit helps it stated. you had the option of 1$, 3$, 5$, 10$, and other...once the donations are in the company i work for will match whatever its employees will donate. you know...alot of bad things are said about chicago courier companies...there are definitely alot of negative things about this industry and those who control it but, this time, well, not this time. i struggle sometimes working here but not this time...this time i felt proud to work here.
i know, i know...i always complain about how much messengers make and no one has loot but, we also know that if you have money for beer then you have money to donate. messengers around the world came together to help our brothers and sisters in japan...for what? for a bike race that got a bit out of hand. im sure we can all dig a little deep here and there to give to those who do not have to fortune to even know the joy of such bike races/events.
cnn has some sad but great pics...
if you haven't done so already...donate! like the company i work for said..."every little bit helps". hopeforhaitinow.org
im proud of those who gave and happy to work where i do(for now...ha!).

global gutz...
if i understand correctly...global gutz has been around since 2000? in any case, this year it'll take place on the 19th of june, 2010. will someone in chicago take up the challenge of organizing a nice route/course? it's cool way to test your skills against other around the world without having to pay for round trip tickets along with room and board...ha!
The idea of Global Gutz is to have a live traffic bicycle courier race in lots of cities all over the world, starting simultaneously, e.g. at 1 p.m. in San Francisco, and 4 p.m. in New York, etc. and held over a given distance and a given amount of checkpoints in an effort to try to make race conditions as equal as possible for everyone. This way we can have a world wide competition without spending a lot of money for traveling somewhere. Everyone will just be racing in their hometown knowing that in various cities around the world there are messengers racing with or against them, and the first male and female competitors to finish will be the lucky winners.
the 1st place male and female get tickets to the actual worlds. this year, as you may know, will be in guatemala. i gotta say...this is one of the top three races i had the pleasure of being a part of...you know, when i actually used to participate in things. check it...
click on fliers to enlarge...
im at number 80...ha! oh man...i was so fast? anywhoo...it's a nice short and fast race. i really do hope someone in chicago decides to put together a course for this year. in other news...the temps should start warming up a bit this week...lets hope it's busy...peace.

cmc's for 2010...
well...it's the new year. we have yet to work on the new year. i wonder what it will bring? busy times? slow times? good times? bad times? what is certain...there will be cycle messenger championships throughout the world to keep us entertained...
the most important event...this year's cmwc will take place in guatemala...
as i stated before...it's my parents homeland and i could not be happier about guatemala hosting. im more than positive that they will not disappoint. don't forget...there's a figure eight track this year. then...in no particular order(?)...cmc's around the world...
i still cannot express how happy i am that atlanta will be hosting this years naccc's. it's looking more and more likely that i will be able to attend this event. i'll leave that for a later post. check out dirtysouthmessengers for any and all updates throughout the year...
i hear through the grapevine that budapest hosted one of the most memorable world's in the history of championships. i wish i could make it to this years ecmc. check out ecmc2010 for all your updates...
the australian championships...i believe a veteran chicago courier has moved to sydney...maybe i can get him to send us a write up of this years event? i'll see what he's up to. in any case...keep an eye on sydbma for updates...
alright...someone correct me if im wrong...these are the polish championships? am i right/wrong? in any case...i know it's messengers and it has the tag cmc on it...ha! check out pcmc2010 for all your updates...
as you know...warsaw will be hosting next years cmwc(2011). they have updated there site so keep an eye on them here. the english translation isn't quite working yet but they promised it will be up and running soon enough...
i haven't seen any updates yet on this years tricmc(swiss, german, french championships) or cimb(spanish championships) but im sure they'll be up later in the year. check out last years events if you're not familiar with them.
as you can see...messengers around the world will be busy all year long. good luck to any and all event planners and volunteers. if i missed any...let me know. this year is looking nice already...peace.
